About this Page and IEO

This page is dedicated to the promotion and collection of articles about oceanography, ocean conservation, ecology and marine life in general. For this task, a collection of news, articles and posts about the IEO (The Spanish Institute of Oceanography) will be commented on and explained here.

The Spanish Institute of Oceanography was founded, thanks to a Royal Decree in April of the year 1914. IEO is a public funded research institution dedicated to doing extensive research within the field of marine science and marine biology. The Spanish Institute of Oceanography focuses especially on the inter relationship of the scientific world and knowledge about ocean life, sustainability, administration of natural resources and the ocean’s environment. The IEO is managed by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the Ministry of Research.

The IEO does not only conduct basic and applied research, but also serves as scientific adviser to the government in connection with oceanography issues, ocean conservation and marine life and science. According to the Sea Fishing Act signed in the year 2001, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography is the main researcher and adviser to the sector and union of fishermen and women. This policy was stipulated by the Spanish government. In addition, the IEO represents Spain not only scientifically but also technologically in international forums and summits that deals with the ocean and its resources etc. The IEO is an autonomous organization with a legal personality and patrimony that has a staff of approximately 700 people.
